Students in CI's pre-college program have achieved impressive outcomes.
CI College Prep classes are held three (3) evenings each week for 14 weeks at the Fortune Society's new headquarters in Long Island City, Queens. This location provides easy access to CI services for students who live in Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan.
The program works with CI students who are most in need of academic remediation. The great majority are newly released from prison and a sizable cohort are living in temporary housing (DOE Fund, Providence House, Fortune Academy, etc). The program provides necessary remediation, anchors participants to a tangible goal - college enrollment and connects students with CI's network of reentry resources and students who have walked the same walk. The tangible and intangible support provided by participating in CI's vibrant learning community cannot be overstated.
Fall 2007 Bridge to College reports 54% enrollment for College Prep students living in temporary housing
The majority of students in the 2007 College Prep program were recently released from prison, with 11 out of 24 living in temporary housing/shelter system during the 14 week program. In spite of these impediments, 13 (54%) enrolled in a CUNY College during the Spring 2008 semester.
